Video daze

Just stumbled across the following clip on one of those random yet often rewarding YouTube trawls. It's an earnest Morrissey being interviewed on TV-am in 1984 by Paul Gambaccini (who was clearly on the run from the fashion police at the time). In it, the young Mozza explains why the Smiths don't - or didn't, at that time - make promo videos to accompany their singles.

Look out also for contributions from Henry "Game For A Laugh" Kelly and Toni "Play Away" Arthur!

Anyway, here is:

(it's one of those 'embedding disabled by request' jobbies, hence the necessary clickage)

Mildly Interesting Pop Fact: Ironically, The Smiths started making promo videos about five minutes after that interview took place. Oh alright then, ten minutes.

Isn't it funny how all the 'square' people's clothes now look outrageously garish, but the 'indie singer' still looks cool? Top YouTube digging there Kips.

PS: Top quiff Mozzer.

Aye, his combo should have been called The Quiffs by rights. Arf.

You're absolutely right though. Not many of us who lived through the decade that fashion forgot could honestly look at quarter-century-old photos of ourselves now and not be thoroughly embarrassed. But the man Morrissey looks the business there.

Morning TV is far more entertaining when looking right back.

The meeting of Kenneth Williams and Bernard Manning which I stumbled upon is a tad surreal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m3ngnTWE8w&feature=related

Bizarrely, that Williams/Manning vid was the one that led me to the Mozza clip in the first place. It's pretty good, that TV-am YouTube channel, eh Dickie? (There's a strange clip with Roland Rat & Chris Tarrant there too.)
